What is the difference between SEO and AI search optimization?
A team can have a useful website and still need to understand what an AI answer says about its services. A search-position report and a review of AI recommendations answer different business questions.
| Question | Traditional search reporting | AI answer review |
|---|---|---|
| Are we being found? | Which searches show our pages, and which bring visitors? | Does the answer accurately recommend our team for the client’s need? |
| What is being shown? | Our search listing, landing page, and relevant business information. | The description of our team, the alternatives named, and any linked sources. |
| What needs attention? | Page access, usefulness, relevance, and the path from a visit to an inquiry. | Verified gaps in the information supporting the answer, alongside those same website foundations. |
| What is the record? | Search performance and website conversion data. | Dated answers, recommendation and citation counts, and a log of approved changes. |
These reporting views can work together. SEO also supports AI discovery; it is not limited to a list of blue links. Google describes optimization for its generative AI search features as part of SEO. Read Google’s guidance.
GEO means generative engine optimization. AEO means answer engine optimization. Providers use these labels for work focused on AI answers. For your team, the useful question is what gets checked, prepared, implemented, and measured.
What stays the same?
Your actual business is the starting point: who you help, where you work, and what makes your service useful. The content should make those facts easy for a prospective client to understand.
A clear identity
Current team and brokerage information, service areas, contact details, and experience you can support.
Useful service pages
Specific answers about your buying or selling process, with local details your team has verified.
Accessible information
Readable pages, working internal links, and access checks for the search systems you want to reach.
Ask your website team to check each platform’s current requirements. For ChatGPT search, OpenAI identifies OAI-SearchBot as its search crawler; its training crawler, GPTBot, has a separate control. OpenAI explains the distinction here.
What does the work look like for a listing team?
ILLUSTRATIVE WORKFLOW · NOT A CLIENT RESULT
“Which real estate teams can help me sell a condo in [city]?”
Suppose an answer names other teams. Your own website has a general seller page but little detail about your condo-selling service. That is a possible gap to investigate.
- Check the answer. Save the exact question, location, date, platform, search settings, and cited URLs. Confirm that the comparison concerns the right service and market.
- Verify the gap. Review the cited pages and your website. Confirm your actual condo-selling experience and process before deciding what to change. Absence from one answer does not establish the cause.
- Prepare useful content. If the gap is confirmed, improve the seller page with approved information about preparing a condo for sale, coordinating building documents, and the support your team provides.
- Publish and review. Add relevant internal links, check the live page, record the publication date, and compare later observations using the agreed questions.
Brightly Found connects these steps. On Growth, you receive the finished copy and an implementation brief; your team or agency publishes, and we review the result. Explore a complete sample report, relocation-page draft, and publishing brief. The sample uses a fictional team and illustrative data.
For a deeper diagnosis of missing recommendations, use our ChatGPT visibility checklist.
What should you measure?
Begin with a defined set of questions about choosing a team in your market. Discovery questions should not name your business. Track branded questions separately to check how your team is described.
- Accurate recommendations
- How many sampled answers identify your team as a relevant option, divided by the comparable answers reviewed.
- Website citations
- Which answers link to your website and which pages they cite. A recommendation and a citation are different observations.
- Work completed
- The approved change, publisher, live URL, publication date, and implementation review.
- Business activity
- Available referral traffic, inquiries, and qualified opportunities, tracked separately from AI mentions.
Keep the questions, locations, platforms, and settings comparable. OpenAI notes that location and relevant saved memory can affect ChatGPT search. Record those conditions and review the underlying sources. How ChatGPT search works.
A sampled recommendation rate is not your share of every AI conversation. Report valid-answer counts and missing data. Repeated observations help assess progress; a change after publication alone does not establish causation or prove that a new lead came from that work.

Common questions
Does AI search optimization replace SEO?
No. AI search visibility builds on many of the same foundations as SEO. For Google’s AI search features, Google explicitly treats the work as SEO. Brightly Found adds a focused process for reviewing AI answers, identifying relevant gaps, preparing improvements, and measuring your team’s visibility across the agreed platforms.
Can we keep our website and SEO agency?
Yes. Brightly Found Growth is designed for teams with someone who can publish approved changes. We prepare the copy, briefs, and technical guidance, answer implementation questions, and review the completed work. You keep your website and existing agency. Premium adds direct implementation within the agreed scope.
Do we need special AI files or schema?
Google says its generative AI search features do not require special AI text files or special schema. Start with useful content and the relevant platform’s access and eligibility requirements. Any structured data should describe the visible page accurately. A file or markup change alone is not proof of improved visibility.
Can Brightly Found guarantee an AI recommendation?
No specific recommendation, ranking, lead, closing, or revenue result is guaranteed. Growth and Premium include a 90-day AI Visibility Progress Guarantee tied to the agreed baseline and eligibility terms, with up to 90 additional days at no monthly fee if qualifying progress has not occurred. Growth clients must implement agreed priorities on schedule.
